Summer Clouds on the Marsh -- New Work

"Summer Clouds on the Marsh"
Krys Pettit
Acrylic on canvas 12" high x 16" wide

It has been a very long year plus. Life is getting a new kind of rhythm. Thankfully the art and creative process never stopped for me.
I've worked on landscapes alot this past year. Some days I could not bring myself to find much joy in my painting. I languished as I am sure you did. One becomes fearful, anxious, and  you pray this will come to a positive end.  Slowly I can see it will.
One of the brighter pieces I created recently reminded me of the coastal marshes of Georgia and Florida.  I miss visiting the ocean and the quiet roads along the waters and grasses that take you there.  For now I visit with my art, for just a little bit longer.
You can find my work at the delightful fine artisan gallery, Wild Oats and Billy Goats, in Decatur GA.

Autumn Trees and Abstract Strokes

I have always enjoyed the abstract quality of working with watercolor. Putting down the colors  and letting them mix randomly on paper is what I love best.
However, working in oil presents a bigger challenge because you have to apply the paint more directly than with a watercolor medium.
I had some luck with this small oil painting of an autumn tree. Lots of paint, mixing on the canvas and random brushstrokes gave me more of an abstract quality with just enough impressionism to satisfy me.
Below is the finished 10" x 8" oil painting of one of my favorite autumn trees.

Exhibiting in Virginia Avery Memorial “Reflections II” Juried Art Exhibition

"Edge of Autumn"
Krys Pettit
Watercolor on Paper
14"H x 20"W

"Windswept"
Krys Pettit
Watercolor on Gesso-coated Paper
11"H x 15"W

I am very honored to have two of my original paintings shown above chosen for exhibit at the Virginia Avery Memorial “Reflections II” Juried Art Exhibition sponsored by the Art Committee of the Atlanta Branch of the The National League of American Pen Women. It was open to all Georgia Women Artists and exhibit dates are August 1~21, 2020.

It is rare to have an actual physical exhibit lately in the Atlanta area because of the challenges of COVID so I am particularly delighted to have my work physically on display with a talented group of women artists. The exhibit is at the Bowen Center for the Arts in Dawsonville, Georgia, about an hour north of Atlanta.

Painting Happiness

Wisteria Watercolor
"Nestled" watercolor of wisteria by Krys Pettit
11x15 inches

I have not been actively blogging for a while.  Taking classes, growing my online presence with my artwork devoured my time. Then COVID came along and altered the way art is shown.
Many art organizations I belong to have stopped or limited on-site exhibits.  The gallery I am part of in Decatur, GA continues to thrive so my work is available there. I work available online in Etsy and on eBay and of course my commissions keep me busy.
But like so many of us the personal contact and interaction is missing. That makes my job of communicating in person with collectors and art supporters basically not happening.
I am filling the gap of non-communication with blogging once again. I've done a tremendous amount of work in the last 6 months and I'm happy to share it here.
I will also be sharing works in progress, what inspires and motivates me. This will help me create more work and continue my growth as an artist. Some of my job is the craft and the technique.  And the evolution and challenge of getting the painting done are something I am happy to share -- we all need someone to occasionally complain to  :).
I tried to analyze why I paint and a big part of it is to bring something unique to a viewer and collector.  It may be joy, sorrow, contemplation, pride -- the emotions vary. In the end my job is to create something that resonates with you. I look forward to being on that journey with you.

One Heck Of a Year

Taking a chance, choosing a new road, mapping out a new destination for an art career--these things have filled 2019 to the brim for me. All are exciting, challenging and a bit daunting. Like the many paths we hike on there are easy ways, narrow and cluttered ways, and they always are going up (mountain hiking). Once you're at the top you find a remarkable reward, not unlike the above spectacular view in this photograph I took. The year's journey has been nothing but rewarding.

I would like to share with you some of the paintings and locations where I have shown my work in the last 8 months in my new North Georgia home. I am truly blessed and grateful for the wonderful opportunities that have presented themselves to me. I am especially grateful to my followers, collectors, friends and fellow artists who have been along for this wonderful ride I have taken.
Happy Holidays and joy to you all.

Change and Upheaval

No more palm trees in my yard -- spectacular hardwoods and rolling hills  now surround me
Relocation has its own particular stress. A positive exciting time, new places, new opportunities, beautiful topography and a wonderful, dare I say, perfect house.  Such was my artistic life for the last 6 months. Rather than creating art I spent my months packing a house and unpacking a house. I found myself keeping company with  200 plus Uhaul boxes.  Bubble wrap -- certainly enough bubble wrap to encircle the globe at least once.  Rolls and rolls of packing tape.   I hate packing tape but I grew fond of the clear stuff vs the brown stuff as the months went on.
After decades in a warm, tropical climate we realized we had enough of paradise. Or at least paradise as tourists and developers imagined it. So we searched for 3 yrs and found a location that was right and comfortable for our life style. Quiet, surrounded by woods, mountains, lakes, and some darn good wineries.  All the details fell into place over a short period of time.  No worries -- I can pack and coordinate the moving of 2 home offices and an entire house.  Let's just say it all worked out wonderful but stress eating (and occasional day drinking) resulted in a comfy extra 10 pounds.
And now I am here. After 6 months of adjustment I am finally finding my way back to healthy eating and creating art.
I am fortunate to have a spectacular location, quiet and with great opportunities to show my work in the region. More than that I have two spaces to work in -- a designated area for office cum watercolor studio and a room in a basement of oil and acrylic work where I don't need to worry about whether the paint dripped on the floor.
New work is slowly taking shape - looser, better composed, plus exploring some new methods.  I'm inspired by the local landscape as the seasons make themselves know but am also revisiting old memories that end up on canvas and paper.

I have been lucky to become part of a local art coop where I can show my work and was thrilled to be accepted in a state-wide exhibit showing in late summer/fall.
More than anything I am grateful. Grateful to have the means to be in a new location, to be excited by new places and opportunities and to have my life as an artist.  It is, indeed, all good.
